Books
A special book has been published about our good friend and mentor,
the late Dr. J.C. Raulston. Chlorophyll in His Veins: J. C.
Raulston, Horticultural Ambassador is a detailed biography of
Dr. Raulston which was written and published (December 2009) by
another friend, Bobby Ward. We have enjoyed the book ourselves
and want to share J.C.'s amazing story with others.

Featured Hosta:
'Orange Marmalade' PP 16,742

This mutation of Hosta 'Paul's Glory' emerges with a green center and green edge in spring. Quickly, the center turns to yellow, and as the season progresses, it transforms to parchment white. The edge stays dark green and provides a dramatic contrast. Each 42" wide clump is topped in July with 2' tall scapes of pale lavender flowers.

Welcome to Plant Delights Nursery @ Juniper Level Botanic Gardens...
the home of Plants with an
Attitude! Plant Delights Nursery Inc., is a NC/USA based international mail order firm specializing
in unusual perennials (some tender perennials for those of you north of zone 7).
The nursery was
officially opened in 1991 after 30+ years of plant collecting and selling at small back yard sales. The
on-line catalog features well over 1000 different perennials, including a wide variety of US natives,
as well as their asian counterparts. Genera of special focus include
amorphophallus,
arisaema,
asarum,
cannas,
crinum lilies,
epimediums,
ferns,
hardy palms,
hardy ginger lilies,
helleborus,
heuchera,
hosta,
lobelia,
ornamental grasses,
pulmonaria,
solomon's seal,
tiarella,
verbena,
and
zephyranthes,
...to mention but a few.
Many of the plants listed are our own introductions, in addition to those of other
breeders...often appearing here for the first time in commerce
(see list of PDN Intros).
Other offerings
are simply some of mother nature's wonderful and overlooked gems. Our plants are not just botanical
novelties, but good non-invasive garden plants. We like to encourage gardeners to plant in our now
famous "Drifts of One", which in contrast to conventional landscaping techniques helps to put fun
back in gardening.
Since 1984, we have conducted one of the most extensive hosta breeding
programs in the country, yielding exciting introductions like
Hosta 'White Wall Tire'(98),
Hosta 'Tattoo' PP 11,603 (98),
Hosta 'Elvis Lives' (95),
and the ugliest hosta ever,
Hosta 'Out House Delight' (94)!
Despite the large number of hostas on the market
today, there is room for distinctive leaf patterns, better flowers,
and good old Southern non-wimpy names.
Our website, in operation since early 1997, has allowed us to list items available only in small
quantities that could not be included in our wild and crazy print catalog. With our secure site,
purchasing plants over the web couldn't be easier, but don't visit just for purchasing. Our site offers
much more including
daily logs from our plant expeditions,
a series of fascinating
plant articles, a
USDA plant hardiness map,
a list of
lectures, and an array of
really cool links.
Our display and trial area here at Juniper Level Botanic Garden contains well over 17,000
different plants arranged in an aesthetic display...see our
on-line photos.
As plants are
evaluated for garden worthiness, they are propagated and then find their way into the catalog. If you
are visiting Raleigh, NC, be sure to check out the section on
how to visit the nursery and display
gardens. There is nothing like seeing a mature plant in person to visualize how it will fit into your
own garden.
Although we are strictly a retail nursery, our customer list is a veritable who's who of
American Horticulture from the largest wholesale nurseries in the US to the smallest backyard
gardeners...all at the same great price. Fasten your seatbelt for a raucous ride through our wild and
crazy catalog...enjoy!
